Our design team really need to be able to apply themes (light/dark mode, density, etc, etc). using tokens.
Currently, they use the variables switching native to Figma.
However due to the many limitations of variables and Figma's approach to them, we are having to compromise the architecture of our tokens to support Figna's approach to them. These are resulting in a) a lot more tokens to manage, b) accidential inconsistencies and general ongoing overhead to manage changes and c) forcing us to make all the colours we need explicit in the primitive layer rather than applying modifiers to base colours in the semantic layer.
A specific example not being able to abstract common colour modifications for states.
Most designers are not involved in token authoring, and need a simple tool whereby they can apply the themes defined in Token Studio.
We would like a light-weight and simple plugin from Token Studios that allows:
Easy theme switching of library based components where the designs are authored with Token Studio token associations
A simple interface to allow the exposure of a subset of the tokens and allow the designers to apply these to new designs (important for our contribution model where the designers are welcome to create new components and submit them for inclusion in the design system, or take these into build and use them in the application layer as a stand alone component).
